This past Saturday, I got to talk with Berkeley-based musical artist Memory Theater on KALX Radio’s Women Hold Up Half the Sky.
Matt Fagaly, who goes by Memory Theater, is a mixed Filipinx dream pop/electronic-ambi musical artist and Cal alum. Their music looks at how oppressive structures and ideologies shape our memories within the violence of anti-Blackness, colonialism, trans and queer antagonism, and capitalism. They’re concerned with how that molds the way we view memory, its place in our lives, and the possibilities it might contain. They believe memory can both immobilize growth and facilitate joy and connection.
